    Can a kind soul help me out with this:

    QUESTION

    A large structural girder has a through the thickness crack of 15mm. If the fracture toughness is 60MN m(-3/2). What service stress would you recommend? Explain any assumptions on which your calculation is based.

    Base on stress intensity factor or strain energy release you can calculate service stress; but you need to have other parameters like type of loading; material property & temp.
    In above example if we assume uniaxial tensile loading @ 25 deg-C then service stress can be calculated as follow.
    Service stress= 60/ (3.14*15*10-3)1/2
    Service stress < 276 MN
