I am working on a corrosion type that appeared on the surface of the 430 quality stainless steel. Could you please check the attachment photo and tell me what is the reason of this corrosion.
To understand the possibility of corrosion in stainless, we must understand that it is an alloy, containing a minimum of 10-1/2% chromium. When chromium comes in contact with oxygen, it forms a natural barrier of chromium oxide called a "passive film", which helps stainless steel is able to "self heal" itself.Halogen salts, especially chlorides easily penetrate this "passive film" and will allow corrosive attack to occur.
