    I am not sure if I fully understand your question? However, If you need to characterize the coating you may use the following techniques:

    Optical light microscopy
    Scanning Electron Microscopy
    Metallurgical Cross Section Examination
    Microhardness Testing
    AES
    Electrochemical Polarization
    X-ray mapping

    If you need to identify the coating in the field you may use PMI type equipment....
