			<![CDATA[We have what appears to be a steel part, with zinc plate and chromed (that golden colour you often see on metal parts). Growing on these parts looks like hairs. When we wipe them off they leave behind little pit marks, which are rust coloured. The thinking here is that it's a fungus growing on the metal, and it has eaten through the surface coating. Does anyone have any ideas what causes these hairs/whiskers? They are white in colour, and about 2-3mm long.]]>

Filamentous corrosion often be found on the steel, aluminum and magnesium that covered with zinc plate or chromed. Its greatest impact factor is the relative humidity. When the relative humidity is between 65%~90%, filamentous corrosion will occur.<br />The ways of protection include avoiding using the coating between the above relative humidity, using a low permeable capacity coating and using crisp coating.]]>
