Matco Associates Inc. will initially assess the towers by completing soil resistivity measurements directly onsite at different depths, therefore including the entire underground portion (including the water table, if present). The electrochemical potential measurements will identify any tower lege or guy anchors that are corroded through to the steel surface . The results will indicate if cathodic protection should be installed immediately to prevent further corrosion of the anchor rod. The electrochemical corrosion rate determination will provide further information on life expectancy of the structure and plan future maintenance protocols. More accurate measurement of the soil corrosivity and galvanic testing will also indicate the acceleration factors for the tower leg or guy anchors due to galvanic action. These aspects are not considered in current inspection test protocols used by inspectors or subcontractors.
