Can anyone tell me the what a typical utility using steel distribution poles would have to spend or encounter with regards to inspecting and maintaining its steel utility poles. I have heard a ground line coating might be sufficient to keep a pole in service 50+ years. Is this true or is it necessary to monitor soil, water table, stray currents, etc...thoughout the life of the pole?
Ground line coating is not adequate corrosion protection if the soil and water table environment is corrosive. Both corrosion of bare galvanized steel and internal corrosion should be considered. You should also note that no organic coating can last 50 years without developing defects. It is very important to monitor the corrosion activity. The inspection frequency depends on soil corrosivity.
